Fic: RunAway - XII. Abroad

Chapter Title: Abroad
Chapter Summary: Dom reflects on his situation
A/N: My apologies for the surely horrible German translations. I don't speak it or even know it, and I just used babelfish for the translations, so I know it's not exactly right. Special thanks to [profile] lhiam for the translations!!!! Thank you so much!!!

“You look familiar.”

“I get that a lot. I’m not who you think I am, though.”

“I don’t know who you are, but you look familiar.”

“I’m not anybody. I wish people wouldn’t say that I look familiar.”

“Sorry, man.”

“Wo ist das nächste Hotel?” Where’s the nearest hotel?

“Die Straße runter.” The girl pointed. Down that street there.

“Danke.” Thank you. Dom hoisted the duffel bag and started down the street. The city was vaguely familiar, but he was glad he spoke the language. He had only lived in Berlin for a few years when he was young, and he didn’t really remember the specifics of the streets.

The hotel room was small, but it didn’t matter. Dom only had plans to stay one night. He checked his cell phone: no messages or calls. He wondered if Viggo had opened the package.

The next day, Dom bought a bus ticket. Viggo called during the ride, but Dom didn’t worry that anyone was listening to his conversation; everyone else on the bus only spoke German. Talking to Viggo lifted his spirits for a while, but soon enough the horrible weight in the pit of his stomach returned.

Dom was aching for a drink, a shower, and home. He rubbed his eyes tiredly. “Daheim verblasst, die Welt rückt nah...” he whispered to himself. Home is behind, the world ahead…

That made him think of Billy, and suddenly he felt sick. Dom took a few deep breaths, and wiped the tears from his cheeks.

The message finally came from Viggo that the job was finished. Dom tried to imagine how his friends—how Billy—would take the news. He knew that if Billy killed himself, Dom would likely do the same, but he also knew that Billy wasn’t like him. Billy was practical and he had a family now. He would accept it, like he accepted the death of his parents, and move on.

His parents… They would be out of their minds when they read his letter. Dom decided not to dwell on their reactions; he would wait until he was alone to cry.

I can’t go back, Dom thought miserably, downing another shot at the bar. It was my choice, though, I have to live with that.

“Du siehst scheiße aus,” the bartender said. You look like shit.

Dom nodded his agreement and left.
