Billy heard a sneeze in the background. “Who’s that, Elijah? I thought you were home alone.”
“Oh, no, that’s Dom. He’s here sick,” Elijah answered, padding down the hallway to Dom’s room.
“Is he alright?”
“Yeah, it’s just a cold. He’s really annoying though—hey!” Elijah joked, abruptly cut off when Dom whacked him with a spare pillow.
“Making me get him tea and soup and extra blankets… Here, he wants to talk to you.”
Elijah passed the phone to Dom, who was busy blowing his nose.
“Hiya, Bill,” Dom finally said, his voice congested.
“You sound terrible.”
“Why than’ you, Bill. My nose is stuffy.”
“I can tell. How’re you feeling?”
“Sick. I miss you.”
“Tell Elijah to fetch you a biscuit or something.”
“Elijah, bugger off,” Dom said loudly, shooing Elijah away from the bed. “Okay, he’s gone.”
“He was right, you are annoying,” Billy said, laughing.
“Oi, you’re supposed t’be on my side.”
“I’m always on your side, Dommeh. I miss you too, by the way.”
“S’good, Bill. Always good to be missed in return.”
“Are you planning on feeling better anytime soon?”
“Nah, I think I’ll just stay sick. S’fun, making Elijah fetch me stuff. And I get to play Playstation all day and watch movies—"
“You fall asleep ten minutes into them,” Elijah shouted from the hallway.
“Oi, didn’t I tell you t’bugger off?”
“Since when have I listened to you?”
Billy laughed at their antics. “Well, Dommeh, I’ve got to go. But I really do hope you feel better soon. Might come to visit you if you’re well.”
“Really?” Dom asked excitedly.
“Yes, really, you daftie. It’s been, what, three months since I’ve seen you?”
“Far too long.”
“Exactly my point.”
Dom sneezed. “Sorry.”
“Bless you.”
“I’m labeled an abomination, Bill. Don’t think the church’ll bless me right now. And anyway, I’ve already been blessed with you, yeah?”
“You’re such a girl, Dom. Now, wipe your nose and get some rest. I’ll see you in a few days.”
“Thanks, Billy. I can’t wait.”
“I’ll email Elijah my flight information.” Billy paused. “I love you, Dommeh.”
Dom smiled. “I love you too, Bill.”
“Now get well, otherwise I won’t come visit. Don’t want t’get sick myself, now, do I?”
“I guess not. Bye then.”
“G’bye, my Dommeh.”
The next day, Billy called again. Elijah picked up the phone. “Hey, Billy! Dom told me you’re coming to visit soon.”
“Yeah, where is Dom, can I talk to him?”
“Sorry, man, but you just missed him. He went out to surf with one of his friends.”
“Surfing? I thought he was sick.”
“Got better sometime in the night, apparently. Woke up with no fever, no stuffy nose, and no cough. You got some kind of Dom-mojo, Bill?” Elijah said, laughing.
“I told him I wouldn’t visit him if he’s still sick,” Billy replied, chuckling quietly.
“That’d do it. I’ll tell him you called, okay?”
“Great. Thanks, ‘Lijah. I’ll see you in a few days.”
