Review: In the Shadow of the Moon
My first SIFF movie of the festival: a documentary about the Apollo space missions.
Okay, this was very cool. The director (a Brit!) gave a little introduction and then answered some questions afterward, and he was really awesome. They had footage and stuff that has never really been shown before, and they didn't mess with any of it to make it clearer or to take the scratches out. As the director said, the cameras were brought to the moon, so those scratches were made by moondust. It's part of the experience, so why take that out?
Anyway, the video clips were fantastic, and I so wish I had been alive at the time of (and old enough to remember) the moon landing. There were interviews with about 7 of the 9 living astronauts that flew in the Apollo missions, including Buzz Aldrin (lol, I kept thinking "I have a picture of him on my wall!"), Jim Lovell, Mike Collins and some of the others. It was just really really cool. They talked about how it felt, what they thought at the time, and how everything worked. The director said that he got the sense that a lot of them were talking so much about everything because they didn't know when they would get the chance to do so again. 3 (it is 3, right? I can't remember) of the original astronauts have already died, and these guys are getting on in years. The documentary was a really nice kind of memoir or something, going through the whole space program and everything, explaining about the emotional impact it had on the men. It was really amazing to watch.
The whole thing had a very nostalgic feel, which was especially interesting because, as I said, I wasn't even alive at the time. It also (towards the end) had a bit of an environmentalist kind of thing, and some of the astronauts talked about how the environment is changing, visibly, from what it was at the time they went up to space. There was also the sense of frustration from the astronauts (and the director confirmed this in his Q&A) because we never went back to the moon. *sigh* Iwish hope we do sometime soon.
Also, the director was a very cool guy and he had a lot of interesting, in-depth answers for the questions people asked, but seriously, I loved listening to him also because of his accent. >.< I wanna go to England and just listen to you Brits talk! lol!!
