silentdescant: (thinking)

So then, after the Producers disaster, I started Emma.

At first I was skeptical, because I don’t think any part of it measured up to Sense & Sensibility or Pride & Prejudice (either version), but I do like Emma’s character and it was certainly funny enough for me, especially Ewan McGregor’s hair. Seriously, though, I liked it. I thought the acting was good (though not fantastic), and the film as a whole was just nice. However, there were some things that didn’t work for me. First was the change in narrator at the very end; Emma had been narrating the entire movie, and the sudden change to her governess was jarring and unnecessary. Also, a few of the shots did nothing for me. However artistic it may have been, I like to see the characters when they’re speaking. One final gripe; Toni Collette’s character, Harriet, I think her name was, annoyed me. I haven’t read the book, so I’m not sure if she was supposed to or not, but to me personally, I was more annoyed than sympathetic towards her. Actually, Jane Austen movies (I say movies because I’ve never managed to get through an entire book) remind me a lot of fanfiction. The characters pair off in absolutely every possible way and ultimately end up with their perfect match. Well, that happens in a lot of fanfics, though not all, of course.

I'd say about four stars. Somewhere around four, anyway. I'm no good at narrowing things down.
