I’m sorry. I need to be somewhere familiar. I know you don’t care, but I have to get away from everything. I’ve apologized to Evi for keeping her in a one-sided (or is it mutual? I don’t know) relationship. I didn’t love her. I love you, Billy, but you said no. I won’t bother you with a one-sided relationship anymore either.

Billy reread the letter three time before it’s meaning sunk in. Surely Dom didn’t mean what it sounded like. Billy tried to convince himself that Dom was only talking about a vacation of sorts. A little time away from all of his problems. Surely he didn’t mean…
The envelope was postmarked in New Zealand, but Billy had figured that out as soon as he read somewhere familiar.
“I do care, Dommie,” he whispered. “Why do you think I don’t care about you?”

“Billy, is Dom just… Where is he? I mean, he… He wouldn’t… Would he? Billy, would he do that? It wasn’t that bad, was it? Billy, tell me, would he do that?”
“Say it, Lij, fucking say it already,” Billy said in a barely audible whisper.
“Would he kill himself, Billy?” Elijah sobbed into the phone.
“Yes.”
“What the hell happened? What was so terrible? Billy, why did he do this?”
“Elijah, will you shut the fuck up? You think these feelings are new to him? He’s tried this before, Elijah, don’t be so naive. And if I fucking knew why, I would have been able to stop him, wouldn’t I? I fucking did last time. I was the one who had to pick up the pieces while everyone else just thought he was having a bad time adjusting. You didn’t care then, so just fuck off, would you? Fuck. Off.”
“Don’t say that. How can you say I don’t care? You’re the one that hurt him, Billy. That’s why you were the one to fix him. You were the fucking reason!”
“Shut up, Elijah. You don’t know about it, so quit pretending.” Billy hung up before hearing Elijah’s reply.
