Review: A History of Violence

silentdescantSo I watched A History of Violence. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. Am sick, and sleepy, so this is probably going to be on the verge of incoherency.
Bad Thing #1 - the music. It wasn't bad music, but it didn't suit the movie, for the most part. There were parts that sounded like a warped version of Rings, which totally didn't flow right, and then there was the main theme kinda thing which was done by, what, like a brass instrument of some kind? A horn, maybe? Anyway, it didn't work. It was trying to give a feel that the movie didn't have. It kinda threw me off.
Bad Thing #2 - the gore. Ok, yes, it's a David Cronenberg movie, so there's gonna be blood and guts. And for the most part, okay, that's fine. But there were some parts that just looked... dumb. Overkill, for no reason. Like the deleted scene 44, that looked silly more than gross, because Ed Harris's body totally didn't move right and it was just weird.
Good Thing #1 - Viggo. That is all.
Good Thing #2 - the rest of the family, they were awesome. Except the little girl, I didn't like her for some reason. She just seemed too... un-kid-ish. I dunno. But the mom and the son were great.
Bad Thing #3 - while the dialogue was alright, for the most part, the pauses weren't. It seemed to happen more in the beginning than the end, but there were pauses at weird places in the conversation, and it totally didn't make sense. It was jarring.
Good Thing #3 - Viggo's kick-ass-ness. That was awesome.
Bad Thing #4 - the predictability. I knew about as soon as Ed Harris came onscreen that Viggo wasn't who he said he was, etc. I mean, for a while I was like, okay, they could pull this off as Viggo telling the truth, but it would seem weird, and then as everything escalated, I was like, okay, I guess I know where this is headed.
Bad Thing #5 - the bad guys were dropping like flies! At the beginning, I was expecting those two guys to be the main bad guys, and then they died, and I was like WTF? NOW WHAT? And the Ed Harris and his cronies came on and I was like, okay, these are the REAL bad guys, but then THEY DIED TOO, and then I was like WHO'S LEFT? And then Viggo went and kicked some serious ass in Philly, and then it was over! And I was like ....? oookay then. I guess that's done. But... why didn't he do that before he left Philly in the first place, if it was that easy??
Bad Thing #6 - the last scene, with the crying. Yeah, yeah, it's emotional, I get that. They just didn't pull it off quite right.
I'm sure they'res more, but that's, what, 6 bad things vs 3 good things? I can't think anymore. I need pills and sleep.
