Movie Review time!

Mission Impossible 3, directed by JJ Abrams, starring Tom Cruise and a quite a few other people.

Contains spoilers.

Good work, JJ Abrams! I was worried there were going to be too many car chases/explosions/death-defying acts/etc, etc. Those things were present, don’t get me wrong, but I didn’t feel there were to many of them. I especially liked the leaping-off-tall-buildings-and-landing-hard-on-the-roof moves by Tom Cruise.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Bend it like Beckham)! I wasn’t expecting him at all! Yay, ‘cause, yeah, I love him. Beautiful accent. Pretty much anyone with an accent is great in my book. I thought all scenes with him in them were good.

Ah, another good thing: at the end, Tom Cruise gets beat up. Nice. I don’t hate him, but he does get annoying to me after a while. Those brain-zapper things were cool. Wouldn’t want one in my head, though.

I don’t know if it’s just me and my Dominic Monaghan-obsessed brain but I saw a few similarities to Lost. First off, when the talkative British tech guy says “‘End of the world’ type stuff, you know?” it sounded very close to Charlie’s “‘End of the world’ type weather” in Season 1. Also, at the end, when Julia pounds on Ethan’s chest. Uh, Charlie, dead, Jack beating him back to life. Yes. All I could think about. Another thing: I thought it funny that the leading lady’s last name is Monaghan. *snort* I am obsessed.

Technical stuff: I loved the use of sad/slow/soft/pretty music during a few key scenes. I love that in all movies. It’s just cool. I thought the scenery was great; not too dark and sinister or bright and happy. Explosions were good if, at times, probably unnecessary and unrealistic, but hey, it is an action movie after all. I must say, I always like the Mission Impossible costume changes. Very cool. And we get to see Jonathan and Tom yell at each other in Italian!

Oh yes, at the Vatican, everything reminded me of the Dan Brown (Da Vinci Code) book, Angels & Demons. I find it sad that they blew up part of the Vatican, even if it was just an underground tunnel. Cool how they got in, though. “Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall…” Which brings me to my next point, the humor. More than I was expecting, which was nice. It lightened the mood considerably and, in my opinion, the jokes were actually funny.

Out of ten stars, I think I’d give Mission Impossible 3 a 7½.
