When Hobbits Attack!
Former Lord of the Rings hobbits Billy Boyd (pictured right) and Elijah Wood (left), along with their friend Orlando Bloom (right), were seen fighting a man outside a bar on Tuesday. Boyd was in LA for the premiere of his new movie, Undertow. The three friends went outside for a smoke and engaged in a heated conversation with Mark Evans (not pictured), a stuntman for the new Batman movie. Our source says that Wood and Boyd got angry with Evans for commenting on the suicide of Dominic Monaghan (pictured with Boyd, left, and Wood, right), another former hobbit and star of the TV series Lost. Boyd, Wood, and Evans all walked away from the fight with minor injuries such as bloody noses and black eyes, but Bloom, who didn’t join in the actually fistfight, stayed behind to threaten Evans before the three friends left. It is unclear at this time whether Evans will press charges against Boyd for assault.
Boyd has had other almost-violent situations with his fans while at the world premiere of Undertow in London. One woman said that Boyd snapped at her and insulted her after she expressed her feelings regarding Monaghan’s death. Bloom and Wood, both now living in LA, have had several nasty paparazzi encounters in the past month.
Wood stressed that he would not talk about Monaghan’s death or the circumstances surrounding it, and would only say that Monaghan was depressed at the time of his disappearance. Bloom said the same, giving no other information to reporters.
Monaghan, who played Charlie the faded rock star on the show Lost and Merry the hobbit in Rings, admitted a year ago that working with such a large cast is difficult. Both Rings and Lost had large, ensemble casts and lots of special effects. He was rumored to be dating another star of Lost, Evangeline Lilly (pictured with Monaghan, right), who plays Kate, but she insists that any relationship they had ended several months ago, before Monaghan disappeared. The reports of their engagement before Monaghan’s death are false.
Monaghan’s parents released an official statement earlier this month, saying that Monaghan was vacationing in New Zealand (where Lord of the Rings was filmed) when he had a surfing accident on a rocky beach, which led to his death. Several sources now say that this report is false and that Monaghan went to New Zealand and committed suicide. Though there is circumstantial evidence that these rumors are true, none of Monaghan’s friends of family have stepped forward to explain.
The writers of Lost, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, have made no comment so far on the effect Monaghan’s death will have on the show. The fifth season premiere will air at 9:00pm on Wednesday next month on ABC.
