Ian McKellan - gay and awesome

silentdescantApparently we're going to watch Judi Dench and Ian McKellan in Macbeth sometime soon for literature. I think that's absolutely awesome, because I adore Ian. But then one of the guys says:
"I don't like him. I just don't like who he is as a person."
"Dude, he's awesome," I replied disbelievingly.
"He's gay!"
My jaw just dropped. I was speechless. I couldn't really believe that he'd just said that. I mean, this guy is cute, funny, great to hang around with, and he's got hair redder than a Weasley, and he completely blindsided me.
We said back and forth, "He's awesome!" "He's gay!" about five times, I think, before we gave it up as pointless.
The whole thing made me a bit sick to my stomach. I honestly couldn't believe that my friend would say something like that. I mean, it's Sir Ian McKellan! He's well-respected everywhere, he's a fantastic actor, he's a fucking knight, and just to round it out, he was in Lord of the Rings. And because he's openly gay (which just makes him even more awesome, in my opinion), this guy hates him? W. T. F?
I knew on some level that the people I hang around with aren't that open-minded, but I never thought it was such blatant discrimination with them. I mean, fucking hell, I thought... I don't even know what the hell I thought. I'm still a bit O_O about it.
