Yay, another review. Another Seattle International Film Festival movie. Out of the (3) SIFF movies I've seen, this one is the best. I highly recommend it to anyone, as long as the idea of suicide doesn't majorly freak you out.
Beware spoilers.
Open: Guy cleaning an extremely messy house. (Hey, looks like my room!)
Cut Around To: The house is now spotless.
Cut To: Blood, razors, harsh lights, and drop-dead-on-the-floor-with-bleeding-wrists!Guy.
Cut To: Dust bunny in the corner. Guy sees it and is sad. Then Guy dies.
Fade to Black.
Believe it or not, this isn't the end of the movie! So, the guy makes a few suicidal friends and goes on a road trip to find is suicidal girlfriend in some kind of suicide!afterlife. However, even armed with this synopsis, I was not prepared for the hilarity and humor with which it was presented. Zia (the Guy), is adorably young and innocent-looking, while Mikale (the girl), is just PERFECT with her sign defacing. The Russian rock singer (I've forgotten his name) is a bit strange and hard to understand at times, but still very funny. They all have their suicide stories to tell and dreams (if you can call them that) to accomplish.
Zia wishes to find his ex-girlfriend (the reason for his suicide). She apparantly couldn't survive without him.
Mikale got there by an accidental OD, and therefore thinks she was robbed of life and wants to find the P.I.C. (People In Charge) and go back to earth.
The Russian guy... is their driver, basically. It's his car. And his tapes they play. He really completes the insanity picture the three paint, though.
So, the Russian guy finds Nanook and falls in love. Zia finds his ex and discovers she's crazy and not the person he thought she was. Mikale gets back to life, but Zia realizes he loves her, and is sad that she left. So he crawls into the car's black hole (long story) and gets back to earth, where he wakes up in a hospital bed across from Mikale.
The music was funny, and it fit the movie. It also got stuck in my head, but in a good way (for now). Nanook's throat-singing and saw-playing were cool.
The characters were explored nicely, each showing their suicide and a glimpse at former life, except for Desiree, Zia's ex. We never find out how she killed herself, only that she followed the Messiah (another long story). We also never find out what happens to her. As soon as Zia realizes he doesn't love her anymore, she disappears.
So, don't commit suicide, but go with these characters on their hilarious adventure across the wasteland afterlife. This is a remarkably good movie. I was pleasantly surprised.
